Unfair bills and fees

Suppliers have to follow rules on how far back they can bill you, how prices can rise, and what they can charge when you leave. We're building help to check a bill against those rules and write your complaint.

What it will cover

  • Energy back-billing
  • Broadband, mobile and TV price rises
  • Exit and cancellation fees, including gyms

What you should know now

  • If it's your energy supplier's fault, they can't bill you for energy used more than 12 months before the bill.
  • New broadband, mobile and TV contracts since 17 January 2025 can't have price rises linked to inflation. Any rise has to be set out in pounds and pence when you sign up.
  • Unfair terms in a consumer contract, including unfair cancellation fees, aren't binding on you.
  • If a complaint isn't sorted, the energy and communications ombudsmen are free.

How it will work

  1. Upload the bill or the letter.
  2. We check it against the rules for that kind of supplier.
  3. We write your complaint, and the ombudsman case if it goes that far.
